How to go from reactive to proactive EV charging

Putting an end to range anxiety with data-driven charging operations

With electric fleets comes the challenge of ensuring vehicles are charged and ready to use when needed. This can be particularly challenging with large fleets deployed for shared mobility. Ensuring vehicles are strategically charged at times when demand for them is low, is key to charging efficiency and maximizing the revenue potential of each and every vehicle.

Ubiq’s data-driven Predictive Charging service enables operators to move from reactively charging vehicles when empty to charging them proactively at more strategic times. With an innovative crowd-driven approach, Ubiq offers seamless, scalable charging operations.

Proactive not reactive

Based on data-driven demand prediction, Ubiq is able to predict when and where vehicles are likely to be required. By combining this with live fleet data on charging levels, Ubiq can predict the optimum time for recharging and the best place to redeploy vehicles once they are charged. In this way charging is more strategically executed. And with it, operators can remove the fear of running out of battery and pulling vehicles out of action when they should be in use.

“operators can remove the fear of running out of battery and pulling vehicles out of action when they should be in use.”

A crowdsourced approach

Traditionally, charging strategies are based on an operator’s assumptions on when vehicles will need refueling with the physical charging of vehicles carried out by dedicated service teams.

Ubiq’s Predictive Charging service replaces this with a seamless charging ecosystem that runs autonomously, 24/7. By leveraging the power of ordinary citizens - set up, steered and managed by Ubiq - StreetCrowd offers an unrivalled opportunity to scale shared mobility operations. While a service team may only be able to dedicate a certain amount of time each day for charging, the crowd can be called upon any time.

Charging for all kinds of vehicles

The predictive charging service can be deployed for a number of shared mobility types including cars, mopeds and scooters. This could be one-to-one charging where an individual picks up one vehicle at a time, such as for a car or a moped, or it could also be used for bulk charging where an individual collects and charges multiple vehicles at the same time. This would apply to mopeds and scooters which can fit in the back of a truck.

How it works

Ubiq’s service can be deployed for two main use cases:

  1. Determining which vehicles need to be charged at any given time by factoring in the availability of charging stations, and historic and live user behaviour. Ubiq’s charging platform determines when a vehicle needs to be charged, making it eligible for charging.

  • A StreetCrowd user selects an automatically created charging task in the app and moves the vehicle to one of the available charging stations:

  • the StreetCrowd user parks the vehicle there,

  • the StreetCrowd user plugs the vehicle,

  • the StreetCrowd user starts the charging process.

2. Repositioning vehicle once charging completed back into high-demand areas, leaving charging infrastructure available for the next charging activity:

  • Ubiq’s charging service backend determines that a vehicle's charging process is finished and makes it eligible for redeployment into a high demand zone,

  • a StreetCrowd user chooses a rebalancing task and goes to that vehicle,

  • they unplug the vehicle, start it, and move the vehicle into the high demand zone shown in the app.

*Use case & StreetCrowd app details for scooters and mopeds can vary due to swappable batteries or picking up multiple vehicles at once.

With the support of Ubiq’s, operators no longer have to rely on guesswork and inflexible service teams to optimize their charging operations. By outsourcing this to Ubiq, they can benefit from first-class operations without the effort of steering a workforce. In doing so, any shared mobility provider can perfect its charging operations for improved vehicle availability, higher fleet efficiency and increased revenues.

Ubiq’s data-driven services enable shared mobility operators to become profitable by optimizing operational activities such as fleet rebalancing, charging and dynamic pricing.
